Independence day - Guide Kyrgyzstan - Kyrgyz'What?

Independence day

Every year, on August 31st, Kyrgyzstan celebrates its Independence Day.

In 1991, an extraordinary session of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Kyrgyzia adopted a resolution on the « Declaration on the independence of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan ». Since then, the Kyrgyz territory became an independent and sovereign State, after years of it being a republic within the USSR.

The celebrations in Bishkek are grandiose. They start on the the Ala Too Square, the capital’s main square, with artistic contests. All day you can assist concerts of traditional, pop and amateur music, as well as national horse games including the Kok Boru. The day ends with impressive fireworks in the capital.
