Kyzyl-Oi, which means in Kyrgyz language "the red bowl", is a charming village situated on the ancient Silk Road at 1,800 meters (5,905 ft) altitude. The village, which lies by the Kokomeren River, is surrounded by impressive red mountains. Far from other villages and on the road from the Suusamyr Valley to Kochkor, Kyzyl Oi is a great rest place in the heart of the mountains. If you enjoy hiking or horseback riding off the beaten paths, make a stop by Kyzyl-Oi to explore the surroundings.

Back in history

Kyzyl Oil is one of several rare villages on the ancient Silk Road in Kyrgyzstan. At the time, before the Soviet period, nomadic culture was the norm, so settled villages were very rare in the country. Kyzyl Oil was then an important crossing point for all traders who used this road to get to China.

Discovering Kyzyl Oi

The name Kyzyl Oi means "red bowl", a reference to the red mountains which surround the village. Its unique landscape and the peaceful atmosphere which emerges there make of Kyzyl Oil a perfect stop during a trip between Kochkor and the valley of Suusamyr.

In the village, made up of only a dozen houses, calm reigns. Everyone knows each other, and the villagers will be delighted to welcome you and help you organize your trip.

Nested in landscape of peaks and steep ridges, the village offers many opportunities for hiking. You can discover the region on foot or on horseback. Walk along the Kokomeran River, lulled by the sound of birds singing and the water splashing. The landscape is very dry and arid, yet you can find green spots and trees to have a break under some shade. You’ll see a waterfall here and there. It’s the ideal easy hike to relax and enjoy nature.

One of the most popular equestrian trails is the one between the Char valley and the Kumbel pass in Balik Köl. It will take about six hours.

Climate

Generally speaking, it is very cold in Kyzil-Oil, especially in winter, like in other high altitude villages.

Do not forget bring warm clothes as well as a waterproof coat, because you never know when it could rain heavily. But nevertheless, the sun often shines in the region, so take with you a hat and some sunscreen.

How to get there?

Kyzyl Oi is located on the road between Suusamyr Valley and Kochkor. You’ll have to take a car or taxi to go there.

How to get around?

You can ask local drivers to drive you to surrounding villages or to the starting point of your trek. The best way to discover the region is on foot or on a horse.
